Teaching Artifacts

I have taught English writing as a tutor, high school teacher, and graduate teaching assistant, and have two years of experience teaching college-level writing both in person and through the Canvas LMS. These artifacts provide a sample of the teaching values I strive to apply and theories that I practice when teaching. Please click on the images to view artifacts more closely.

Active and Visual Lessons

As a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Memphis, I designed lessons with the energy levels of students' physical bodies in mind. This not only helps kinesthetic learners stay engaged, but also resets the whole class's attention span. 15-minute sections were broken up by activities requiring movement. This lesson includes a "spectrum stand" activity where students use their place in the room to indicate their opinion.

Elements of Student Choice

Whenever possible, I try to provide students with structured options to choose from. This keeps them invested in their own education and allows them to differentiate their learning experience through the choices they make. I often incorporate technology such as real-time polling software to measure student preferences and conduct formative assessments as I deliver new material.

"Gamified" Learning Experiences

Though I have taught students from ages eight to eighteen, none of them have ever become tired of games. "Gamified" learning is really just learning activities that are designed to be more fun and challenging, and to have clear goals, objectives, and checkpoints. They can also provide a welcome break from longer, more intense writing assignments. To teach the use of transitional words and phrases, I created this mad libs game for my high school students. I believe all learning should include lighthearted elements like these, and besides, it makes learning English skills so much more fun.

Teaching Evaluations

The following are evaluations of my teaching from different settings in which I've taught. Please click on the images to view artifacts more closely.

SETE Course Scores

This is the Student Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness (or SETE) score report from the students of my first-year composition class at the University of Memphis. It details several aspects of teaching performance in the eyes of students and shows specific ratings in various categories of teaching ability.
